We took doubleTwist for a spin to see if we could connectĪll our devices in a big, happy multi-format love-in. We had no trouble transferring a WMV video to our iPhone, BlackBerry Bold 9000 and Nokia E51, and the video worked well, once on the devices. We like that files are automatically converted to a useable format when they're transferred.

It's complicated to keep them organised on all those different devices, but it would be a good feature to have. It has large, finger-friendly icons, the standard grid-interface for browsing albums, and an overall dark theme thats easy on the eyes. Instead, it dumps them all into one large pool. The user interface is very iTunes-like, and, as befits a beta, there's plenty of room to increase the amount of features. It's worth noting that the Mac version lacks iPhone support, too.

On features: the Mac version supports drag-and-drop to and from your devices, while, on the PC, we had to tick what we wanted to sync, such as all photos or specific folders. It has just the right set of features and it is very cool to be able to use non-proprietary software to sync a multitude of devices. There's a beta version for Mac, which has been out for around a month, and now there's a PC beta version too. Those behind doubleTwist also claim it supports most digital Windows Mobile phones, Sony PlayStation Portables and Amazon Kindles.

Everything transferred properly, except for the metadata that was lost in the conversion from M4A to MP3. I ejected the Droid X, unplugged it, and opened the DoubleTwist app. I plugged the Droid X into the PC’s USB port, dragged the playlists, and dropped them on the Droid X. Then, to make matters worse, the converted MP3 files did not retain the artist, album or genre metadata. DoubleTwist then converted all of the M4A-encoded songs to MP3 and copied them back to my flash drive without asking.

DoubleTwist Desktop choked when I selected more than four songs at a time, and I had to kill it with the Windows Task Manager. You can create playlists by dragging and dropping songs. Initially, DoubleTwist Desktop dumps all the music on your device or external drive into one view-you can’t just look at one album or folder until you import them into your Library. The software doesn’t provide any tips or guidance, so it’s a matter of trial and error. Creating playlists is an inconsistent and frustrating experience.
